Understanding Antisemitism in Australia

Understanding Antisemitism in Australia is a publication of the Australian Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism (ASECA), appointed by the Prime Minister and supported by the Department of Home Affairs.

This handbook supports national efforts to understand, recognise and counter antisemitism across all sectors of Australian society. It was prepared under the leadership of Special Envoy Jillian Segal AO. Its foundation lies in Australia’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Working Definition of Antisemitism, in 2021 with bipartisan support. This is the leading definition of antisemitism worldwide.

The handbook was developed through extensive national consultations across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart, Launceston, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra, drawing on the testimony of Jewish community leaders, educators, legal practitioners, law enforcement, parliamentarians and civil servants. The handbook reflects the lived experience of Jewish Australians and responds to a deeply concerning rise in antisemitism across the country.

This resource is practical, evidence-based and sector-specific. It is aimed for schools, universities, workplaces, government agencies, community organisations, and anyone seeking to understand and combat antisemitism in Australia today.
