Understanding Antisemitism in Australia is a publication of the Australian Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism (ASECA). ASECA was appointed by the Prime Minister and is supported by the Department of Home Affairs.
This handbook supports national efforts to understand, recognise and counter antisemitism across all parts of Australian society. It was prepared under the leadership of Special Envoy Jillian Segal AO. Its foundation lies in Australia’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance Working Definition of Antisemitism, in 2021 with bipartisan support. This is the leading definition of antisemitism worldwide.
The handbook was developed through extensive national consultations across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart, Launceston, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra. It draws on the testimony of:
- Jewish community leaders
- educators
- legal practitioners
- law enforcement
- parliamentarians
- civil servants.
The handbook reflects the lived experience of Jewish Australians. It responds to a deeply concerning rise in antisemitism across the country.
This resource is practical, evidence-based and sector-specific. It is aimed at:
- schools
- universities
- workplaces
- government agencies
- community organisations
anyone seeking to understand and combat antisemitism in Australia today.
