In the shadow of the lives lost at Bondi, I acknowledge the Government’s formal adoption of my National Plan to Combat Antisemitism.
I thank the Prime Minister and the Government for recognising the gravity of this moment and for wholeheartedly endorsing the Plan.
The response is detailed and reflects considered engagement with the recommendations. However, it must be clearly understood that this is only the beginning. These measures represent first steps in what must now become a sustained national and whole of society effort.
I particularly note the legal reforms announced today. These changes will make it more difficult for those seeking to spread hate to do so with impunity.
Urgent implementation is critical. Jewish Australians continue to face threats to their safety and way of life. Education must be placed at the forefront. Ongoing protection is required for schools, synagogues and community institutions. Law enforcement must act consistently. Digital platforms must be held accountable. Delays have consequences.
Longer-term reforms must follow across education, universities, media and the public sector. Structural change takes time, but it must begin now.
This is not about symbolic gestures. It is about ensuring that what happened in Bondi is never allowed to happen again and that Australia’s Jewish community can feel safe and embraced for who they are.
The Office of the Special Envoy will monitor the Government’s implementation of its response and will provide detailed implementation plans to the Government.
